The teenage years are hard for everyone. Unfortunately, teens in today’s world are faced with pressures that twenty years ago young people did not have to go through. For the majority of youth in the US, a large part of their lives is put on social media. Technology has opened up the opportunity to predators to message or persuade impressionable youth. There are countless stories on the news about teens or children that have been abducted due to adults talking to them online. Criminals can easily enter a person’s home now just by children using the computer. Technology has opened up a new realm for children to be harmed and when measures are taken to close off one avenue of attack, the perpetrators find a new way. People can be anything they want to be on these sites. Pictures can be tailore d or altered before they are posted. The person can control everything about the content of their online life (Swingle, 2015). For some people, their online social media activity is taking over their offline life. It seems that for some, they feel the need to talk about everything that they do from waking up to posting pictures of everything they eat. It is as if they are searching for validation or acceptance from those in the online world. The online world allows a person to be whoever they want to be and give only the information that they want to give about themselves to others. This in itself could be what isolates people (Davis, 2014). Transparency is key to a lasting interpersonal relationship. If a person is only putting out the information about themselves that makes their life seem perfect, then it would be hard to allow people from the online world into their offline world. Imperfections would be seen, and the perfect online persona would be destroyed. The social media sites have also led to troubles in marriages and romantic relationships.
